By: (Al-Sammani Awadalla) A meeting was held yesterday in Addis Ababa between the African Union (AU), Government of Sudan (GoS), Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), Minni Arcoi faction, and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) to follow up cessation of hostilities in Darfur.
The Presidential Advisor and head of Sudan Delegation to Abuja Talks, Dr. Majzoub Al-Khalifa, told Sudan Vision Daily that the Presidential Assistant, Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Dabi, will lead the Sudanese delegation to Addis Ababa cessation of hostilities talks. Al-Khalifa affirmed that Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) implementation is proceeding well and on schedule as witnessed by AU. With regards to Annan’s proposal which he presented to the UN Security Council (SC) last Monday, providing for the deployment of 24,000 troops in Darfur, Khalifa said the Government stance on the issue is unchanged. He referred to the report Sudan presented to the UN Secretary-General, rejecting the deployment. He further affirmed that the Government owns the right to rejecting such a deployment, and that nothing could be done in that respect without its consent. It is worth noting that Annan has proposed last Monday, before the UNSC the deployment of 24,000 military and police forces in Darfur, stating that the UN task initially requires the deployment of 3,300 police officers, 16 military units and 125 military officers to make a total of 5,300 officers.
