Government: Time Ripe for Political Settlement in Darfur

Khartoum- Al-Sammani Awadallah The Sudanese Government said that the current time is opportune for reaching a political settlement to Darfur issue through the new round of Doha talks convened at the end of this month between it and the armed movement.
The spokesperson of the Sudanese delegation to the said talks Shertawi Gaafer Abdul Hakem affirmed that they are ready for the coming round and they accepted the proposal of the Joint AU-UN mediator for Darfur Djibril Bassole and the Qatari mediator Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud to convene a new round of talks in the last week of the current month.
He told Sudan Vision that the local, regional, and international efforts integrate for the unification of Darfur movements explaining that if the said step succeeds, it will be the best to realize the required peace affirming that his delegation is ready to sit with any movement that will arrive in Doha and reach with it a peace agreement.
Shertawi Abdul Hakem indicated that the time is quite ripe on the national level for reaching a settlement to Darfur issue pointing out that the Darfuri community and the Sudanese one as a whole have the desire to reach a peaceful settlement for the said issue hoping that the coming round will be the last one.
He indicated that the regional and international efforts being exerted in this regard besides the current efforts to restore the relations with Chad support the Qatari initiative. He pointed to the role of the US special envoy to Sudan Scott Gration in unifying the Darfur movements.
On the movements participating in the upcoming talks, he said that three factions have signed an agreement in Libya and expressed their readiness for the negotiations. But he indicated that both Justice and Equality Movement, Khalil branch and Sudan Liberation Movement, Abdul Wahid branch have not decided their positions clearly indicating that there are efforts exerted with the other factions to unify them expressing his optimism for the success of international community to put pressure on both movements to catch up the said round of talks.
Abdul Hakem said that the latest report of the African Elders Committee Chairman Thabo Mbeki came from a number of meetings in Darfur, which its recommendations have come from reality there and from Darfur community desire affirming that the said recommendations will support the coming talks.
He said that the recent Moscow meetings with participation of the international envoys will be strong motivation for the success of the talks particularly the participation of the government delegation in the said gathering which considered main support for the issue.
