Allafrica.com Ugandan traders are set to hold a peaceful demonstration to rebuke the recurrent cases of harassment in South Sudan. Kampala City Traders Association (Kacita) spokesperson Issa Sekitto told journalists in Kampala on Monday that they forwarded a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura seeking permission to hold the demonstration.
If the Police does not approve the demo, the traders said they will mobilise Ugandans in Juba and Yei to suspend trading with South Sudan. We will do everything possible to block business between Uganda and South Sudan," said Mr Sekitto. "We want immediate action to be taken against those involved in the mistreatment of Ugandans." There have been persistent complaints by Ugandan traders in Juba claiming ill-treatment by Sudanese. Early in the year, Ugandan car dealers were arrested and held hostage by mutinying Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA) fighters for non-payment of arrears amounting to three months, according to Sudanese press. The traders had their money and other personal belongings confiscated. In 2007, the Chairperson United Elgon Business Community and Development Forum, Mr Rashid Manafa, was robbed $3500 (about Shs7 million) and three of his cars destined for Juba were taken.
