Government Accuses ICC of Seeking to Undermine Doha Peace Talks
Posted on Wednesday, July 14 @ 00:20:00 UTC by admin

Obaid: Some parties are seeking to destabilize the country and harm its development
By Staff Writer
The Information Minister and spokesperson for government, Dr. Kamal Obaid, said the ICC new decision confirms that the institution is a political institution with political agenda.

He said the timing of the decision on the Sudan confirms this. In a press statement yesterday, Dr. Obaid said such decisions are meant to undermine efforts being made by the government for the reconciliation of the Darfur issue. Dr. Obaid affirmed that the new decision as was the case with previous decisions was meant to undercut the efforts of the joint mediation that has been working to arriving at a final settlement of the Darfur issue. He added that the decision undercuts the strategy presented by government representative and the official in-charge of the Darfur issue settlement and was debated and endorsed by members of the National Assembly, including members representing the Darfur community. The information minister added that the government has nothing to do with this court and that the reply to such decisions will be in the form of more achievements in the home front. "The government will continue with its development policies and achievements and will ignore desperate attempts by some quarters who seek to destabilize the country and stop the development process taking shape in the country," he said.

On the other hand, Sudan's representative to the UN, Ambassador Abdel Mahmoud Abdel Haleem, descried the ICC decision issued last Monday against President Omer Al Bashir which carried the additional charge of genocide as being a despicable and desperate attempt by the ICC to undermine and harm the development of the country. Mr. Abdel Haleem said in a press statement that the decision both in terms of its timing and contents aimed at undermining peace efforts in the Sudan and speeding up the attempts of fragmenting and dividing the country and doing away with the Doha peace talks. Mr. Abdel Haleem urged all peace-loving countries and people of the world to face up to this role resolutely. He affirmed that the decision does not add something new and that in the contrary it uncovers the evil agenda of the Court and those who stand behind it.

On his part, Dr. Omer Adam Rahma, spokesperson for the government delegation to the Darfur Peace Talks in the Doha Forum strongly criticized the decision. He said the decision of the so-called International Criminal Court against President of the Republic would give negative messages that may complicate attempts for resolving the Darfur problem, and the continuation of the sufferings of the citizens of the region. He said these decisions are political no doubt and the Sudan has no obligations to abide by them. Dr. Rahma added that the ICC deals with the Sudan in a political way and the court would not move when justice was grossly violated in a number of counties for political reasons.

On its part, the Democratic Unionist Party (the Original) rejected any attempt to undermine the symbol of the sovereignty of the Sudan, President Omer Al Bashir.

It is to be recalled that the First Preliminary Circuit at the ICC has issued a second order by adding genocide charge against President-elect Omer Al Bashir.

On its part, the Sudanese embassy in Washington described the ICC as becoming a real threat to justice and that it has become a political tool in the name of law.
