U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan General Scott Gration expressed satisfaction towards registration phase as a part of the democratic process in Sudan and called on Sudanese people to register to vote . “I would encourage people to register to vote.
This is a responsibility that I take very seriously. In my country, I vote in every election that I get a chance to vote. I make my will known. It is part of the democratic process. And we are pleased to see that Sudan is entering into the registration period, that things are proceeding, and we look forward to a good election in April” stated the retired general who is said to enjoy the confidence of President Obama. He gave those remarks in Khartoum following his visits to registration centers in Khartoum, Abyei and Darfur during his last visit to Sudan.
On October 18, Obama administration declared the new American foreign policy towards the Sudan, in a move that has been long awaited since President Obama took office.
The declaration was a result of numerous talks and negotiations between Major General J. Scott Gration, the US special envoy to the Sudan, and the Sudanese authorities.
Obama has apparently changed the US foreign policy, compared to his predecessor Bush whose approach to foreign relations viewed widely as harmful to the US national interest. The new approach adopted US involvement through bilateral dialogue.
During his last visit, Gration went to Abyei town and Muglad. He also visited Darfur, where he met UNAMID and a variety of other people in a El Fasher and then went up to El Geneina in western Darfur.
General Gration described the visit as “very nice” and added “And, again, I appreciate the hospitality that has been shown to me throughout this visit.”
