Press Release The Government of Japan decided to contribute 11 million US dollars in total for Japanese NGOs’ projects in Southern Sudan through Japan Platform (JPF).
Currently in Southern Sudan, seven JPF-member NGOs (AAR Japan, ADRA Japan, CARE International Japan, Japan Center for Conflict Prevention, JEN, Peace Winds Japan, and World Vision Japan) run projects in the areas of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), health, education, repatriation and livelihood[j1].
“Since the JPF member NGOs launched assistance projects in 2006, a total of 14.2 [j2]million USD from the Government of Japan was allocated to 18 [j3]projects of Japanese NGOs in Sudan through JPF,” said Mr. Koichi Suzuki, Secretary-General of Japan Platform.
H.E. Mr. Akinori Wada, Japanese Ambassador designated to Sudan, gave an overview on Japanese NGOs activities in Southern Sudan. “Most of the Japanese NGOs in Southern Sudan work in the remote areas where assistance by UN agencies and even NGOs does not reach out, such as Pagak and Manyo in Upper Nile, Mabior and outskirts of Bor in Jonglei, Kapoeta in East Equatoria, Mararucon in Bahar El Ghazal. Some other NGOs are based in and around Juba, where they closely collaborate with UN agencies and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)” Ambassador Wada said. All over Sudan, 10 Japanese NGOs are working on 11 projects, engaging in a wide range of activities from humanitarian assistance to a football training program for Sudanese youth.
JPF is a Japanese emergency and humanitarian aid organization made up of a consortium of 32 Japanese NGOs, the business community, and the Government of Japan. Since its establishment in 2000, JPF has provided funding totaling some 124 million USD for 504 humanitarian projects around the world implemented by Japanese NGOs.
